William Gay Ballantine was born in 1848 and received his B.A. from Marietta College in 1868. In 1872, he graduated from Union Theological Seminary and entered upon post-graduate studies at the University of Leipzig. He served with the American Palestine Expedition in 1873. Before joining the Oberlin theological faculty in 1878, he taught at Ripon College and the University of Indiana.
