Johnstone was a prominent Maryland genealogist, as well as a renowned expert on Assyriology and Semitic languages. He was the verifying genealogist of the Colonial Dames of America, edited a volume of the genealogies of members of the Maryland Society of Colonial Wars, and contributed many articles to the Maryland Historical Magazine. This collection includes notes, charts, letters, transcripts, photocopies, and lecture notes used for his research on many Maryland families.
