A political science major, Wheller was politically active and participated in May Day parades, the Longshoremen's Strike, and other activities. He married Mary Lukes, class of 1935. He relateds his family's broad Reed connections and his subsequent academic and teaching career at Brandon University, Yale, and Oxford.
