Mario Cantú was a well-known restaurant owner and civil rights activist in San Antonio, Tex. He was born Mauro Casiano Cantú, Jr. in San Antonio in 1937 and spent most of his life and career there. Cantú managed restaurants in San Antonio, Paris, and New Jersey. Dick J. Reavis was born December 27, 1945 in Elk City, Oklahoma. He was involved with civil rights activism in high school and through college, joining the organizations NAACP, SCOPE, SCLC, and SDS. After graduating from the University of Texas-Austin, Reavis started a career in journalism, moving his way up from his father's newspaper to writing for Texas Observer, and later for Texas Monthly, where he became senior editor until resigning in 1990.
