Williams, a physician writing to a cousin from Crittenden Co., KY, describes the prevalence of disease in the area. He also comments on the fate of two rebel acquaintances who had been captured and the actions of rebel guerrillas in the area. A letter on the reverse written by John M. Williams, James' cousin, to John's brother mentions the death of another brother.

James M. Williams was born in Kentucky ca. 1834. He became a physician and practiced in Crittenden Co., KY, during the 1860s. He and his wife, Mary Rebecca, had two daughters. He died prior to 1870.
