Papers, 1849-1913.

The majority of the collection consists of Sutton's quartermaster records while serving with the 17th Indiana while stationed in Alabama, April 1864 to July 1865. The records include orders, ordnance records, shipping receipts, foraging records and supply records including receipts and return of clothing, receipts for Spencer Repeating Rifles, and requisitions for horses. The papers also contain G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) material including dues receipts, member's cards, publications and general correspondence primarily but not exclusively for Post Number 115 of New Carlisle, Indiana. There also are several reunion announcements for Wilder's Brigade in 1913 (after Sutton's death).

Joseph Sutton (1838-1903) was born in Portage County, Ohio, and came to Hudson Township, LaPorte County Indiana in 1855. In May 1861 he enlisted in Company C of the 17th Indiana Infantry Volunteers which formed part of Wilder's Brigade serving in Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia and taking part in the battles of Shiloh, Perrysville, Chickamauga and the sieges of Knoxville and Atlanta.
