Bayard Taylor papers. 1844-1952. (bulk 1860-1890).

The papers of Pennsylvania-born author, translator, and diplomat Baynard Taylor consist of correspondence, short manuscripts, photographs and other pictorial material, printed items, legal documents, memorabilia, and biographical and family papers. The over 125 letters include a number written during Taylor's frequent European travels and his diplomatic service in St. Petersburg (1862-63) and Berlin (1878). Among the manuscripts are further descriptions of Germany and other countries used in his many travel books. Other correspondence concerns personal and business matters, especially the publication of his books and his connections with various newspapers, particularly the New York Tribune. Also in the collection are several early translations done by Taylor, and the contract for his famous translation of Goethe's Faust.
