Educated West Point, graduated 1843. Served in Mexican-American War, as Professor at West Point for three years and as an engineer until the outbreak of the Civil War. Dyer was Chief of Ordnance of the United States Army invading New Mexico during the Mexican War. He also participated in battles in Taos, New Mexico during the Taos Revolt of 1847.
