Dr. Samuel Clark Red was a graduate of the University of Texas, having entered when it opened in 1883, and graduated June 17, 1885 with the first Bachelor of Arts degree ever issued by the University. The University of Texas at Austin (UT) opened in 1883 with eight professors, four assistants, a proctor, and 221 male and female students.
