Letter, 21 Dec. 1860, from Davis to his wife discusses passage and signing of Ordinance of Secession and the ensuing public celebration, "the ordinance was passed which carried So[uth] Ca[rolina] out of the Confederacy, and she is now the sovereign and independent Commonwealth of So[uth] Ca[rolina]." Davis went on to give an account of the signing ceremony and the public celebration outside Institute Hall; letter, 2 Apr. 1861, from Davis at the Convention while it met in secret session, to his son Means Davis, requesting news of the progress of Mr Neely [presumably an overseer] in preparing the fields for spring planting with instructions. Civil War items include letter, 10 June 1864, Edwin Faust Bookter to Col. Davis, re his recovery from a wound and death of his brother Nathan Bookter, and taking comfort that his brother had recently joined the church; genealogical materials on the Means and Davis families, a copy of "The Arm-Chair of Tustenuggee. A Tradition of the Catawba" by William Gilmore Simms from the May 1840 issue of Godey's Lady's Book, and two diplomas: the 1843 New York University medical degree of James Davis and the 1844 South Carolina College A.B. degree of Henry Campbell Davis. A bound volume is labeled "Vocabulary of the Catawba Language with Grammatical Notes: From Oscar Lieber's Field Notes in his Journal of Geology, 1858 (Found by Henry C. Davis in the Treasurer's Office of the University of South Carolina, and copied by him, February, 1936). Unrevised first draft for the inspection of Dr. Frank G. Speck, University of Pennsylvania." Includes examples of the work of Davis' grandson, Henry Campbell Davis (1879-1951), as a professor of English composition at the University of South Carolina are found in "Errors in Freshman themes, 1911-2" and similar papers. Majority of items consist of chromo cards, advertisements, price lists and samples from card manufacturers, chiefly ca. 1880s (224 items).
