February 13, 1890, letter mentions that he has just returned from Mexico, exploring for cliff and cave dwellings in the Sierra Madre mountains. Says that though he is busy, he may find time to "tag on behind in the series" proposed by McClure. November 6, 1890, letter mentions that he is sending the last of five articles (all 2000 words in length) requested by McClure on October 13. He requests a receipt. November 18, 1890, letter mentions receipt of "A Journey over an Alaskan Range of Snow Clad Mountains" that McClure has returned for rewriting. He replies that he will rewrite or more likely send another, if that is agreeable. July 31, 1892, letter mentions that he will leave shortly for China, Japan and Corea [sic] for three months if he can get "proper encouragement" to do a series of letters. He could provide two or three columns with illustrations once a week and says he will be backed by a new steamship line and that the Tacoma Ledger will make the arrangements. October 12, 1892, letter encloses an article of over 2000 words (subject unknown). Proposes an article or a series of articles (to be done before the opening of the World's Fair), on the relation of Arctic research and the exploration of America. Suggests the "probability that Columbus received the first intimation of this continent while on an Arctic exploration to Iceland" and other theories.

Frederick Schwatka. Explorer, born in Galena, Ill., where he later worked at printing. Attended Willamette University. Graduated from West Point, held army posts, while studying law and medicine. Became interested in exploration and convinced the American Geographical Society to back an attempt to discover the fate of the expedition of Sir John Franklin to the Arctic, thirty years earlier.
