Enoch Pratt letters, 1857-1864 [microform].

Enoch Pratt was a Baltimore businessman who made his fortune in banking, insurance, and transportation and dedicated it to civic improvement. He endowed a free public library in Baltimore (Enoch Pratt Free Library), the Sheppard Asylum (Sheppard-Pratt Hospital), and the House of Reformation and Instruction for Colored Children. These letters are to John Knight, an American living in Europe. The letters discuss general business conditions, the Panic of 1857, and war news. Pratt apparently managed investments for Knight. An 1857 letter mentions George Peabody endowing an institute in Baltimore, Md.
