Letter to D.S.G. Cabell [manucript], 1872 December 23.

Describes a rumor ("intelligence received here from Richmond") that the state will withdraw support for the University of Virginia and Virginia Military Institute. Describes the motive for discontinuing the university's annuity as "economy" (well-informed persons considering "the University a little leech upon the body politic ... making either no return at all, or an impalbable one"). Upholds the prestige of the university, its supplying of professors to other colleges, and its giving Virginia a moral and intellectual influence as reasons for maintaining it. Asserts that personal interests of the "dozen & a half men who are immediately connected with the University" are "not to be considered for a moment" in his pleading for its support. Urges Cabell to see that his representatives in Senate and House appreciate the popular demand of Minor's appeal for the university.
