[Military commission certificates for John Burk, 1759, 1760].

First document, dated 31 March 1759, is a commission appointing John Burk "captain of a company in the second battalion of a regiment of foot whereof Brigadeer General Timothy Ruggles is Colonel raised by me to be employed in his Majesty's service the ensuing campaign". The second document, dated February 1760, is a commission appointing John Burk "major of the first battalion of a regiment whereof Timothy Ruggles Esqr is Colonel". The documents, partially printed forms completed by hand, are signed by A[ndrew] Oliver, Sec., and governor Thomas Pownall.

Ten companies comprised the 12th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia: five from Boston, one from North Bridgewater, one from Abington, one from Weymouth, one from Stoughton, and one from Gloucester. After organization was completed, the regiment was ordered to Fort Warren in Boston Harbor.
