The collection contains the personal and professional papers of Clarence Nichols Hickman and Charles Fuller Stoddard. These two inventors were colleagues at the American Piano Company where they worked together inventing and perfecting the Ampico Reproducing Piano.

Clarence Nichols Hickman was born 16 August 1889 near Lizton, Indiana. He met his wife Mabel Bigwood in New Albany, Indiana where he taught physics at the local high school. He lived in Indiana until 1917 when he began his graduate studies at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. It was there that he began his studies on rocket development.
