Impressment documents, 1862 August 23.

Document orders the impressment of one fourth of the male slaves in Amherst, Buckingham, Cumberland and Nelson counties to work on fortifications near Richmond. It lists the rate of pay, conditions and rules. It further authorizes Junius Lamb to issue receipts for the slaves and assures Confederate government responsibility in case of escape or injury by the enemy. The verso of the document has a note by Lamb authorizing Wiliam W. Bailey sub agent to collect and deliver impressed slaves at Scotssville Ferry. Four unused receipts signed by Lamb are included.
