While on an Arctic exploration, Amundsen's ship, the Maud, was disabled by a broken propeller off the Siberian coast. He requested assistance from Captain Claude S. William W. Sale traveled to Dawson in 1899 to join his brother Jack. After working in the Wade Creek mining district, he went to Nome where he worked as deputy recorder and insurance clerk. He met and married Neeta Tobey in Nome. In 1912 they moved to Seattle and later to Los Angeles. While in Nome, the Sales collected native artifacts which are now housed at the Alaska State Museum in Juneau.
