Papers of artist Francis (Frank) William Loring of Boston, Mass., 1861-68, include letters written to his mother Anna Thorndike, sister Mary (Molly) Greeley, and uncle Charles Greeley Loring, among others, pertaining to his service as sergeant major in the 24th Regiment, Mass. Volunteer Infantry, lieutenant in the 38th Regiment, Mass. Volunteer Infantry, and major in the U.S. Volunteers during the Civil War. Also includes letters of recommendation written to Massachusetts Governor John A. Andrew, on behalf of Loring, by his uncle Charles and other prominent family and friends; commendations and military orders; and printed and manuscript military maps.
