Born in Covington, N.Y. As a young man he taught school and served as a guard at the Auburn prison. Later, he formed a dry goods partnership with William Sunderland of Auburn. Settled in Gowanda soon after his 1840 marriage to Marietta Waldron of Scipio, N.Y. Served as a supervisor of Persia, N.Y. from 1857-1868. From the description of Papers, 1844-1886.
