Papers of William Staples Tallman, 1926-1992.

The collection consists primarily of the correspondence and professional papers of William S. Tallman together with correspondence of the family of his wife Peggy, including her brother Alexander, a University of Virginia graduate. Professional papers of Tallman include diaries, reports, payroll records, correspondence, promotional materials, memoranda, newsclippings, time books, photographs and memoranda relating to the carving of Mount Rushmore and other Gutzon Borglum projects including Stone Mountain and the North Carolina Monument at Gettysburg. Of interest are his sketches of Mount Rushmore and photographs of workers, drilling and blasting operatins, equipment and construction techniques and scale models. Correspondents include Lincoln Ellis, Mary Ellis, Audrey Shaff, and Howard Shaff. Of interest in the family papers are a talk by Louis Haselmayer on Alexander Rommel and his role in musice education at Iowa Wesleyan College and an English translation of a biography of Georg Rommel, a cantor at Liebenstein, Germany. There are also World War II letters, mainly from family and friends stationed stateside.
