Boethius was a member of the Roman aristocracy who became expert in logic, mathematics, music, theology and philosophy. He was appointed to high office under Theodoric and executed for political reasons in 524/5. The Scrinium of the Roman Church existed from the 4th century, functioning as both library and archives. In the 6th century it was under the Primicerius Notariorum (see ID VATV032-A). By the end of the 8th century it was headed by the Bibliothecarius, who also served as the chancellor. This library was lost in the 13th century.
