[Letter and proposal of William Dampier, 1702-1703].

English adventurer and occasional pirate outlines a proposal to take the treasure that comes yearly from the mines of Potosi to Lima, or failing that, to either capture "some rich town on the coast of Peru" or to capture one of the ships that trade from Acapulco to Lucomia. Proposal has caption title: "Proposals for making a very adventageous voyages to the South Seas" dated July 10th 1702. The letter, addressed to "Hond Sir", is dated Kinsale [West Indies?] August ye 6th 1703 and is identified on verso as "from Capt Dampier scheme of what hee proposed to do". Letter and proposal are bound into a flatback, full leather bound enclosure with marbled endsheets.
