Papers and photographs, 1952-1963.

Scrapbook, photographs, personal military papers, and slides of Dean Rockstad, a Madison, Wis. native who served as a clerk typist and apprentice printer with the Korean Military Advisory Group (KMAG) Detachment in South Korea during the Cold War. The scattered documents in this collection are: draft registration cards, certificates, personal military paper file and souvenir postcards. The scrapbook was dismantled for preservation purposes and a photocopy of the original order was maintained in the collection. The photographs (Box 1) document his time with KMAG. Working for the KMAG newsletter, Rockstad collected several promotional photographs giving excellent views of Taegu (Korea) snack bar and bowling alley. There is also a photograph of two Korean soldiers and an American soldier, as well as scenery shots of the Tonga temple. Other photographs show recreational activities including tennis, mock training exercises, swimming, Christmas celebration, and relaxing in barracks. There are also images of the KMAG base, and individual images of Rockstad. An oversized 1955 unit photo (PhOv9) of Company B, 86th Reconnaissance Battalion with members identified is also included. The slides (Box 2) are primarily additional images of the bases, people, cities, and landscape of Korea. They also include footage of various sites around Japan such as Kegan Falls and the Imperial palace. Other slides include soldiers reliving boredom by engaging in "barracks antics," and attending a New Years Party (1957).
