Mary M. Dunning collection, 1943-1945.

This collection consists of letters collected by Selma L. Bandemer. Bandemer saved letters from two friends who were serving in the military during the war. One was Ensign (later Lieutenant) Robert Craig, who served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific. The other was Lieutenant Mary M. Dunning who was a U.S. Army nurse serving in North Africa and Italy. Those written by Robert Craig detail his experience as a submarine sailor. These letters were censored, so he could not discuss specific battles. However, he described life on a submarine and gave his perspective on the Polynesian cultures he encountered while in the Pacific. The letters written by Ms. Dunning are more extensive. She speaks of her life as an Army nurse where she was in charge of a pneumonia ward in Utah. The other letters describe her overseas duty in North Africa and Naples during and at the end of the war. In addition to letters, Dunning also sent French cartoon postcards (dated 1943) to Selma Bandemer. This collection also contains examples of V-MAIL.
