The Mullen case : collection, 1947-1964.

The collection contains transcripts of testimony, court briefs, petitions, statements, correspondence, and newspaper clippings. The transcripts of testimony are present for the case against Musmanno and the Senate Sub-Committee hearings. There are numerous statements from witnesses along with statements by Musmanno and Mullen. Also included is the report of findings of the Senate Sub-Committee. The newspaper clippings give a daily record of the activities of the whole affair.

John Mullen, Jr., of Shamokin, Pennsylvania, graduated from Penn State in 1917 with a degree in horticulture. He was a member of Sigma Nu, the manager of the class baseball team his junior year, on the 1917 editorial staff of La Vie yearbook, and a member of the Senior Dance Committee. Michael A. Musmanno was a member of the Pennsylvania State Legislature from 1929 to 1931. He authored a bill outlawing the Coal and Iron Police in western Pennsylvania. He also authored the movie script, and later the novel, Black fury which fictionalized the story of John Barkowski, an employee of the Pittsbugth Coal Company who was beaten to death by the Coal and Iron Police for no apparent reason.
