Dearborn Engineering Laboratory records series, 1906-1940 (bulk 1923-1928).

The Dearborn Engineering Laboratory records series consists of five subseries. The General Subject Files subseries, 1923-1925 (65.6 cubic ft), Acc. 94, includes correspondence, reports, product and material tests, purchase agreements, and working papers from parts suppliers and the general public. The subseries covers a variety of topics such as assemblies, accessories, raw materials, patent investigations, and letters from the general public. The Walter T. Fishleigh subseries, 1926-1927 (9.6 cubic ft.), Acc. 94, includes the office files of Walter T. Fishleigh, administrative engineer at the Dearborn Engineering Laboratory. Fishleigh handled much of the daily office correspondence of engineers such as Joseph Galamb, Eugene Farkas, and Laurence Sheldrick from applicants, suppliers, contractors, and the general public regarding Ford Motor Company's engineering programs. Of special interest are the letters written to Henry Ford offering new inventions or requesting assistance in experimental design. The Charles H. Foster subseries, 1926-1928 (12 cubic ft.), Acc. 94, includes the office files of Charles H. Foster, an administrative engineer in the Dearborn laboratory. The subseries includes correspondence, reports, working papers, and design drawings covering parts, machinery, and accessory design and production. The Edward S. Huff records subseries, 1906-1933 (0.4 cubic ft.), Acc. 799, includes design drawings and sketches by Edward S. Huff. The Logbooks and Manuals subseries, 1937-1939 (0.4 cubic ft. and 2 folders), Acc. 376, 1664, consists of a department daily log book of activities, 1937-1939 and two Drafting Department standards manuals, 1937-1938.

Industrialist and philanthropist Henry Ford, born July 30, 1863, grew up on a farm in what is now Dearborn, Michigan. Mechanically inclined from an early age, he worked in Detroit machine shops as a young man and became an engineer at the Edison Illuminating Company in 1891.
