Lewis Metzler Clement was born in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada, in 1837. He was a central figure in the planning and construction of the Central Pacific Railroad across California's Sierra Nevada mountains and the deserts of the Nevada and Utah Territories (1863-1869).
