The collection contains 21 letters from Phinney to his wife Mary describing his Civil War service including his eyewitness account of the attack on Fort Sumter. Other topics include a civilian boating accident, life in camp, family news from home, leaving the guards and enlisting in the 6th Infantry Regiment, selling a female slave, camp in Virginia, deaths from disease, rumors of peace, action at Williamsburg, and the Union Army's imminent attack on Richmond. The collection also contains some letters from his wife Mary concerning sewing for the regiment and debts due her; Confederate tax receipts, a Confederate bond, some newsclippings and photographs (tintype and ambrotypes).
