The collection consists of correspondence; addresses and papers on health, farming and economics; bylaws of the San Gabriel School of Living, 1951-1956; lessons; progress reports; programs; application forms; lists of members; outlines; announcements of events; notes; charts; articles of incorporation; bulletins; memoranda; questionnaires; bibliographies; press releases of the School, serials, clippings, reprints, pamphlets, book jackets, flyers, meeting minutes, financial reports, articles of incorporation, and books by Ralph Borsodi. These papers pertain to homesteading as against urban living, decentralized government and economic production; sexual freedom as advocated by Leo Kock, University of Illinois' biology professor; contacts with the Henry George School of Social Science at New York City and the American Humanist Association of Yellow Springs, Ohio; dietary and organically-grown foods as cures for disease; a new philosophy for living; and annual conferences of various branches of the School for Living.

The School of Living was established in 1934 by Ralph Borsodi (1888- ) as an experimental living arrangement advocating decentralized living, small communities with garden space and parks, and a return to the traditional old town hall and small open meetings in lieu of big government. Members of the school were encouraged to abandon the ugly cities, live and grow their food on small farms and re-examine their old set of values.
