Painted words : R. Lee White and Plains Indian pictography, 1986.

"The Painted Words exhibit takes you on a journey to the world of North America's Plains Indians. Before our own time, Plains Indians expressed an artistic voice by painting pictorial histories and sacred designs on garments, hides, shields, tipis, and pages in ledger books. Painted Words also introduces you to an exciting contemporary American Indian artist, R. Lee White. A passionate and compassionate spokesman, White is inspired by the Plains Indian's artistic legacy. He is represented in Painted Words by a thematically-unified series of painting and works on paper. White's is a superbly narrative art; Painted Words tells the story of his world, his a time, and his vision. The art is two types: historic works from the nineteenth century done in traditional Plains Indian style and the modern creations of R. Lee White. The historic material provides the inspirational foundation upon which White's contemporary images have been fashioned"--The publication, p vii. Photography by Al Abrams, Jeffrey Crespi and Pat A.
