The collection contains general correspondence, 1968-1973, from friends, publishers, and fellow Casanova scholars, as well as research notes on Casanova, Childs's diary, 1929-1934, appointment books, 1952-1963, passports, genealogies of the Rives and South Carolina Reeves families, Christmas cards, and foreign service appointment certificates. Photographs constitute the bulk of the collection. Subjects include friends and relations, consular activities in Saudi Arabia, Yemeni cities, wartime activities in Tangiers, and a 1949 tour of the southwestern United States to study crops and water supply. Also included are 3 scrapbooks of Georgina (de Brylkine) Childs from her childhood in Russia, schooldays at The Cliff, Eastbourne, England, and European travels. Of special note are a United States map of 1820 and a xerox copy of a signed letter by Casanova dated April 1798.

James Rives Childs was born February 6, 1893 in Lynchburg, Virginia. He attended the Virginia Military Institute before graduating from Randolph-Macon College in 1912, then earned a master of arts from Harvard University in 1915.
