The majority of the collection is family letters of Mahon, his wife, sons, step-daughter and brother-in-law. Six excellent letters from Mahon to his wife from the Mexican War. Transcript of Mexican War diary, Sept. 1846-Jan. 1847. Eight letters, 1843-1852, from John A. McClernand discuss Democratic Party politics. One letter each from John M. Palmer, Augustus French, John Reynolds, Gustav Koerner and others to President Franklin Pierce recommending Mahon for the U.S. consulate in Ireland. Several letters discuss the practice of medicine in Ohio and Iowa.
