Documents relating to African American slaves owned by Lewis O'Bryan, of Colleton District, S.C. Bill of sale, 13 June 1835, Walterboro, S.C., William S. Price, to Lewis O'Bryan, for $550: for "Limus," aged about twelve, and girl Sue aged ten years; bill of sale, 13 Apr. 1841, Charleston, S.C., John Boyle, by agent Tho[mas] N. Gadsden, to Lewis O'Bryan, five slaves for $825: Hannah and four children, Joe, Kewa, Frank, and Daphney; and receipt, 22 Apr. 1841, William Furgerson, Colleton District, to Lewis O'Bryan, $300 for purchase of Liddy, aged about nine years. Also including order in equity, 2 June 1857, to deliver slaves, Sarah, Plenty, March, Jim, Harry, Clara, Nanny, and an infant child of Sarah to Lewis A. O'Bryan, trustee for Margaret Jones under a marriage settlement in the case of Margaret Jones "by next friend" Lewis A. O'Bryan v. Lewis M. Jones and Lewis O'Bryan. Order issued by J[ob] Johnston[e] (true copy, 20 Sept. 1861, signed by W.F.B. Haynsworth).
