Hadley-Allen papers [microform], 1854-1894.

Correspondence of the Milton Hadley and Charles Allen families, many of whom moved from Indiana to Kansas. Both families were Quakers, and some members worked at the Shawnee Friends Mission near present Kansas City, Kan. Primarily letters received by George Allen, oldest son of Charles Allen, and from his siblings, other relatives, & friends, the latter 2 mostly in Indiana. Many of George's siblings went to Kansas. Many of the letters are from his elder sister, Rebecca, and her husband, Cyrenus Weesner, who was the uncle of George's wife, Mary. Rebecca & Cyrenus married; went to Iowa & through Kansas to the Indian Territory, where they worked at an Indian agency; and settled in Emporia, Kan., ca. 1880. Other letters are from George's brothers Alfred, Asa (Ace), Enoch, and Harvey Allen. Letters from Milton Hadley, a friend, try to entice George to migrate to Kansas and talk of a vegetarian settlement (later Neosho City, Kan.) on the Neosho River. Some letters include typescripts. Includes a record book of George Allen's unsuccessful trip to Kansas in 1869-1870 to purchase land and letters to Allen from Samuel Stewart and Henry Chubb, promoters of the vegetarian colony.
