Papers, 1847-1983.

The bulk of the collection consists of history of medicine research materials: several hundred reprints (mid 19th c.-1960s); reproductions of source texts; extensive materials used in the preparation of O'Malley's books on Vesalius, Leonardo da Vinci, and the brain and spinal cord; many portraits of historical figures; and other notes, illustrations, bibliographies, catalogs, etc. Professional and academic activities are represented by drafts of lectures and manuscripts; correspondence with medical historians such as John Fulton, Noël Poynter, and Charles Singer; and documentation of work with the History of Science Society and the International Academy of the History of Medicine. Biographical material centers on memorials, tributes, and letters to his widow.

John Farquhar Fulton was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on November 1, 1899. He received B.S. and M.D. degrees from Harvard, and a M.A. and D. Phil. from Oxford. He was appointed Sterling Professor of Physiology at Yale in 1929 and in 1951 became the first Sterling professor of the history of medicine. C.D. O'Malley was born in Alameda, California in 1908; married Frances Keddie; Ph. D. from Stanford University (1945). By 1951 he was Professor of History at Stanford; he was Professor of Medical History at the University of California, Los Angeles from 1960 until his death in Los Angeles in 1970.
