Children of the wind, ca. 1922.

This undated manuscript of Children of the wind was delivered by Shiel to the publisher Grant Richards on 22 June 1922. It is an adventure novel in which a lost heiress takes over an African tribe; themes consist of tribal warfare, including "biological warfare" and lesbianism. The book has been described as "a full-blooded story done in his fabulously refreshing style" written after a ten-year hiatus. The novel was first published by Richards in 1923.

Matthew Phipps Shiel began life in the West Indies of Irish parentage and later studied languages and medicine in London, before the appearance of his first book Prince Zaleski, in 1895. He subsequently wrote over thirty novels including such classic works as The Lord of the Sea, The Yellow Danger, How the Old Woman Got Home, and his science fiction masterpiece, The Purple Cloud.
