General description of the collection: The Grace Dayton papers consist of 116 letters to and from Leon Meacham, 9 letters to Grace Dayton from various writers, and 4 miscellaneous letters from others to their families. The Meacham letters describe his induction at Fort Niagra, New York; basic training at Harlington, Texas, where he saw Paramount Pictures making a movie; his assignment to Mission Field, Texas, with 504th Single Engine Flying Training Squadron as a mechanic where he describes in detail his leave times in Mexico and Brownsville; preparing planes for bad weather; local football games; daily life and his work routine as a shift worker; his further education in instrument training at Randolph field, Texas; the USO and its traveling shows; Charro Days in Matamoros, Mexico; news about Moore Field post-war activities; and the arrival of the first Women's Army Corps (WAC) units to relieve men for duty elsewhere. He includes a copy of THE RAMP, vol. 2, #18; a postcard showing enlisted barracks; a bullfight program; and a football program along with clippings about the area. Also included are letters to Grace Dayton mainly of personal information; two printed speeches by Douglas MacArthur and Dennis Hart Mahan; and miscellaneous letters to people seemingly unconnected to Dayton.
