Mackay family letters, 1828-1854.

The Mackay family letters consists of three folders of correspondence mainly between Eliza Anne McQueen (1778-1862) and her children John, Sarah, William, Margaret, Eliza Anne and Catherine. The correspondence from her daughters speaks of family news, gossip and travel notes. Other correspondents include Robert Mitchell, G. A. Stiles, Sarah A. Hodges, and M. E. Hayes. Letters were sent from Savannah, Vienna, Paris, New York and Tybee Island. Letter destinations were Savannah, New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Correspondence from John Mackay to Eliza Anne McQueen was sent from various locations including Tampa Bay, Florida, the Cherokee Agency near Calhoun, Tennessee and Pendleton, South Carolina. These locations reflect John's service with the military. John's letters contain information about Georgia and the relocation of the Cherokees as well as plantation life, politics and family news.

Robert Mackay (1772-1816), a well known merchant of Savannah, Georgia and Liverpool, England married Eliza Anne McQueen (1778-1862) in 1800. They had eight children, six of whom are correspondents in this collection. The Mackay children are: Mary Anne Mackay (1803-1862) married in 1825 to Benjamin Edward Stiles; William Mein Mackay (1804-1859) married to Virginia Sarah Bryan (d. 1838); John Mackay (1805-1848); Margaret Cowper Mackay (1807-1893) married in 1830 to Dr. Ralph Emms Elliot (1797-1853...
