In the land of the elevator girls uses the elevator as a metophorical vehichle to reveal an outsider's view into contemporary Japanese culture. As the elevator doors open and close the viewer is offered brief glimpses of a series of landscapes - natural, urban, cultural and domestic. The viewer is transported from witnessing theatrical performances to an elevator surveillance camera's recording of everyday life.

Steina Vasulka was born in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1940 and studied at the Music Conservatory in Prague from1959-1963. She emigrated to the United States in 1965 with her husband, media artist Woody Vasulka. Together, the couple produced a pioneering body of work in the 1970's, earning them pretigious awards and international recognition.
