Reminiscence and sketches, c. 1825-1862.

Consists of essay entitled "Remarks and Reminiscence in relation to the history of Buffalo" and two pencil sketches by Le Grand St. John donated to the Buffalo Historical Society the year of its founding. St. John drew on his experiences as one of the earliest European settlers of Buffalo to create these drawings that are some of the only surviving first-hand depictions of the village's early years. Drawing No. 9 depicts the Walk-in-the-Water, the first steam-powered ship in Lake Erie, and Drawing No. 10 shows General Lafayette's visit to Buffalo in 1825. Drawings Nos. 1-7 were later donated to the society by one of St. John's descendents and can be found in Mss. A00-507.
