Who bought what where? A look at the business and shopping district of Columbia, South Carolina, 1904 [2003 Dec.] ; [typescript] / Heather Carpini.

Study exploring extent of increasing level of segregation in Columbia, S.C., during early years of 20th century; the author considered the year 1904 as a midpoint between passage of Jim Crow laws during 1890s and the complete legal segregation in effect by World War I. Author finds evidence that race or gender of the owner of a business did not necessarily dictate the race of the clientele; this period also marked a transition from use of buildings for multiple purposes to one in which residential, commercial, and industrial spaces were becoming more specialized and separate.
