Papers of James Rives Childs

1862-1971

The collection contains papers of the Childs family and general correspondence of Childs (1966-1971), especially letters from the Baroness Marcelle de Jouvenel. Manuscripts and copies of some of Childs's more recent articles are included, as well as the manuscript for his book "Up from the earth's center." A major segment of the collection contains photographs from Child's foreign travels. Also included are photographs of Childs's and his family, his student career, his military service, and his foreign travels. The majority of the papers concern Childs's interest in Giacomo Giorlamo Casanova de Seingalt. There are copies on microfilm of Casanova's memoirs and correspondence in addition to books, articles, and letters written about him.

James Rives Childs was born February 6, 1893 in Lynchburg, Virginia. He attended the Virginia Military Institute before graduating from Randolph-Macon College in 1912, then earned a master of arts from Harvard University in 1915.
