On March 20, 1850, Mr. Gilman set out from San Francisco in the schooner "Laura Virginia" for Trinidad Bay, into which the Trinity River was said to empty. After a six day journey they realized that the Trinity River did not empty into it, and so they continued to explore the coast up to the mouth of the Columbia River.
