"This brick was in the wall of the building in which The Southern Literary Messenger was published when that journal was edited by Edgar Allan Poe. This building was located at the S.E. Cor. of Main and 17th Sts., Richmond, Va. and this brick was selected by Hon. Rosewell Page, of Hanover Co., Va. & Dr. J. Packard Laird of Miami, Fla., the afternoon of Nov. 10th 1922."

Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an American author, poet, and critic. In 1834 Poe married his cousin Virginia, who was not quite fourteen at the time, and began seriously seeking a means of supporting "his family." In the spring of 1835, the family moved back to Richmond where Poe took a position with the Southern Literary Messenger .
