John Adam Treutlen (1733-1782) was the first governor of the state of Georgia. He lived in St. Mathews Parish (Effingham County); he represented the parish at the Provincial Congress in 1775. Treutlen served as governor, 1777-1778; he later moved near Orangeburg, South Carolina, and was elected to the state assembly for his district.
