Album compiled during Scarlett's service aboard HMS Algerine and HMS Alacrity during the ships' service with the Asiatic Squadron, including images of the execution of pirates on Kowloon Beach, shell damage to Russian cruisers Askold and Variag and gunboat Korietz, damage to buildings around Port Arthur, sights of Shanghai, Peking, Hong Kong and Wei-hai-wei. Also portraits of the officers and crews of the Algerine (1904) and the Alacrity (1905).

Richard Howe, Earl Howe, was born in London, England, on March 19, 1726, the son of Emanuel Scrope Howe (1699-1735) and Mary Sophia Charlotte von Kielmansegg (1703-1782).
