Discusses camp life, marches, drilling, and artillery practice during May 1862, and describes a drunken brawl involving members of his battery on May 27. Diary does not cover most of the period June-July 1862, but does give a description of the Battle of Cedar Mountain on Aug. 9, 1862. Describes capture of 2 Union soldiers near Brandy Station on Aug. 18 and then bridging the Rappahannock River in high water; describes his participation in "Stonewall" Jackson's flank march around General John Pope's Union forces to Manassas, Va. and raiding captured stores at Manassas Junction; details his activities at the 2nd Battle of Bull Run (Manassas), noting that the Confederates lost quite a number in killed and wounded. Records feeling very sick at the Battle of Chantilly. Remainder of the diary describes his convalescence in and around Leesburg, Va., where he notes raids and movement by Union cavalry, hearing firing from the direction of Harper's Ferry, and news about a large battle near Sharpsburg (Antietam). Also mentioned are names of people who assisted him in his recovery and of families from the Leesburg area. Included with the transcript are copies of 2 1924 obituaries of Tyler.
