Literary papers and correspondence of Geoffrey Hill, with some related material. 1952-1988.

Comprises: (1) Literary papers of Geoffrey Hill relating to several of his publications, including 'O nata lux de lumine' (ca. 1974), 'Ad incensum lucernae' (ca. 1975), 'Tenebrae'(1978), and 'Collected poems' (1985), with several sets of uncorrected proofs of the 'Collected poems' and several copies of the cover design for the published work; (2) Autograph manuscript and typescript correspondence of Geoffrey Hill with various different correspondents, including William Cookson (between 1965 and 1986), Robin Robertson (between 1984 and 1988 with associated material, notably 4 black and white photographs of Geoffrey Hill and a typed copy of Hill's curriculum vitae, dated 1986), and colleagues at Leeds University (between 1973 and 1980), and 2 early autograph manuscript letters from Hill, one from Oxford, ca. 1954, and the other entitled 'PenseĢes', ca. 1952; (3) Copies of publications containing reviews of Hill's poetry, notably the 'New Statesman' and 'The Listener', dating between 1959 and 1971; and (4) Photocopied typescript of an interview with Geoffrey Hill conducted by John Haffenden, ca. 1980, with autograph manuscript revisions, later published in 'Viewpoints: poets in conversation with John Haffenden', 1981.

Geoffrey Hill was born in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire in 1932. After teaching for many years at the universities of Leeds and Cambridge, he moved to the United States in 1988, and now holds the post of Professor of Literature and Religion at Boston University. His volumes of poetry have received critical acclaim and he has been awarded numerous honours and prizes, including the Hawthornden Prize in 1969 and the Whitbread Award in 1971.
