Correspondence to Sarah McCrae and children from John G. and Bettie Richards re holidays, children's birthdays, weather, planting, and improvements to family farm at Liberty Hill, S.C.; letter, 1 Mar. 1932, Bettie Richards to Sarah McCrae, re her experiences driving the family car; and letters to John G. Richards as governor (1927-1931), whose administration was known for promotion of blue laws and liquor control, including 8 Oct. 1927, from J.M. Richards, Weatherford, Tex., advocating prohibition and morality. Other letters concern Thomas McCrae's alcohol addiction and recovery; genealogical research for D.A.R and U.D.C. membership, including "Richards Family from 1779"; and World War II military service of sons Steven and John Richards McCrae, including letters, 1944, written by Steven while a German prisoner of war, and letter, 17 Mar. 1945, from John McCrae concerning conditions of U.S. prisoners under Japanese occupation of the Philippines. Also includes newspaper clippings and articles re deaths of McCrae's mother, Bettie Richards and of Sarah McCrae, jobs held by Steven McCrae, career of John Richards McCrae, and military service and death of Stephen Malone Richards; will of John G. Richards; photographs of Richards and McCrae family. Printed materials include publication Railroad Commission of South Carolina, 22 June 1918: Freight Rate Adjustment--Increase in Freight Rates and Railroad Commission's 40th annual report to the Governor and General Assembly, 22 June 1918 [after his first unsuccessful bid for governor in 1910, J.G. Richards was appointed to the state Railroad Commission, where he sat for twelve years between 1910 and 1926]. Also including 2 issues of Prisoners of War Bulletin, a newsletter published by American National Red Cross for stateside families: Sept. 1944, a special supplement, "Gefangenen Gazette," with humorous essays and cartoons in color, and Feb. 1945 issue.
