Calhoun, a native of Boston, Massachusetts, moved to Springfield, Illinois in 1830. He held several political offices, including state legislator and Springfield mayor. He became surveyor general of the Kansas Territory in 1854, and was eventually mired in controversy over the Lecompton Constitution. From the description of Letter, July 8, 1839.
